Dede Toney

Mrs. Toney is the oldest of ten children, wife to Robert Toney Sr. For thirty six years, mother of four young adults and Nana to six grandchildren.  Born in Smyrna Georgia but grew up in Huntsville Alabama, Mrs. Toney struggled to read.  Her dream of teaching and becoming a published writer propelled her to not give up.  In 1977 she graduated from High school and attended Alabama A&M University where she graduated with honors.  In 1981 Mrs Toney's dream to teach became a reality.

She was the pre-school teacher at a private school, and in 1991 taught First Grade at the same place.  She was nominated and became "Teacher of the year" in 1999 and, in the same year was nominated by her principal and became "Walmart Teacher of the Year".  In 2000 Mrs. Toney left the private school and taught at a charter school and also enrolled in their dyslexic training program.

During that first year of teaching she was "Teacher of the year."  In 2002 She graduated from the program and was Certified as an Academic Language Therapist.  In 2006 received her License from the state of Texas as a Dyslexic Therapist.  2004 Mrs. Toney began teaching first grade at Woodridge Elementary and in that same year published her first book "Glimpses of God's Faithfulness."
In 2009 she no longer taught First Grade but was asked to teach the Language Science (dyslexic) program on campus.  2010 she entered graduate school and released her second book called "Don't Erase the Board,"  a story about her academic struggles and how ONE teacher BELIEVED in her and gave her the power to believe in herself.  2012 Mrs. Toney graduated from Mississippi College with honors with a Masters Degree in Education with a specialization in Dyslexic Therapy.

It is not for boasting that Mrs. Toney reveals her accomplishments, but with humility.  Everyday she is reminded and thankful for that struggling little girl who is now an adult contributing to a profession that rescued her.  A dream she never thought would be possible.

This Bio is for every struggling student, or adult  who has been told."It can't be done by you".  She is the loudest cheerleader for that struggling student, and that dreamless heart.  Mrs. Toney is a witness that dreams do come true and the product of the Investment of ONE teacher.

If you asked her what is her greatest accomplishments, she would not say any of the things mentioned above, she would say her greatest joy comes when she is face to face with her students everyday and believing that they are among the greats.  She would say that as educators when we intentionally teach with passion in spite of obstacles, we position each student to RISE to new heights, despite their life's challenges.  We give them HOPE and provide opportunities for them to LEARN safely without ridicule while they work on their weaknesses.

Currently Mrs. Toney is writing the sequel to "Don't Erase the Board"  A story of her life now as an educator.  Stay tuned!!!
